GOT no plans for today?
Settle down for a Saturday at home with a whole host of entertaining telly, including a brand-new crime drama and all the unseen action from the Love Island villa.
Here are TV Mag’s six telly picks for Saturday 8 June 2024…
Jana: Marked For Life (9pm BBC4)
BBC Four’s new Saturday-night crime drama is a well-made, gripping psychological thriller which comes to us from Sweden.
Madeleine Martin plays Jana Berzelius, a public prosecutor and former child soldier.
When we meet her, she’s arriving late to her adoptive father’s retirement party, and it soon becomes clear that family relations are tense.
Then, Jana has only just landed a promotion when a senior figure at the Swedish Migration Agency is brutally murdered in his own home.
Before long, the investigation exhumes ghosts from her own past.
This series is based on a novel by Swedish author Emelie Schepp, who has written four internationally bestselling books to date with Jana as the protagonist.
So it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing more adaptations.
In Swedish, with English subtitles.
Tom Jones: Later… With Jools Holland (8.30pm BBC2)
It’s not unusual for the Beeb to present a smorgasbord of performances they’ve broadcast with some of the greatest music artists.
But because Tom Jones has appeared on Later… so many times, this special is dedicated just to the Welsh legend’s renditions on that show.
Expect duets with the likes of Solomon Burke, Robert Plant and Jeff Beck, and songs including Black Betty and I’m Growing Old, from his 2021 No.1 album Surrounded By Time.
In For A Penny (6.15pm ITV1)
He’s travelled across the UK with his portable game show, but now Stephen Mulhern’s taking it to the US of A.
Yep, the bumper final episode of the current series is being held at Florida’s WaltDisneyWorld Resort.
(ITV really are In For A Penny, it seems.)
Expect a supersized show packed full of games and beloved characters – and we wouldn’t put it past Stephen to pop up in a Donald Duck costume, either.
Love Island: Unseen Bits (9pm ITV2)
The truth is, no one likes a hiatus from the main action, especially as we’ve only had five days to get to know the new Islanders.
But Unseen Bits is less of a consolation prize and more of a bonus as we get to see the action that producers couldn’t cram into the weekday shows.
We expect lots of funny – or downright silly – moments that would normally be reserved for an outtakes reel.
Ainsley’s National Trust Cook Off (11.40am ITV1)
Chef and presenter Briony May Williams (Escape To The Country, Morning Live) and popular vegan YouTube cook Gaz Oakley are Ainsley’s guests this week.
The foodie trio are at Tyntesfield in Somerset, which has a bountiful kitchen garden with plenty of fresh ingredients.
Former Bake Off favourite Briony whips up some crispy kale and a lemon verbena pesto filo tart using kale picked fresh from the garden, while Gaz prepares loaded courgettes, shiitake and walnut mince with garlic tahini and nasturtiums.
Not to be outdone, Ainsley whips up some potato and chive scones, with eggs, bacon and blistered tomatoes.
Just delicious.
Later… With Jools Holland(10.25pm BBC2)
Leeds rock band Yard Act head to London’s Alexandra Palace for a return appearance on Later.
They’ll be playing tracks from their second album Where’s My Utopia?.
Also joining Jools tonight – and performing with him – is British music legend Gabrielle, who is doing the festival circuit this summer and an arena tour next year.
Plus, making their Later debut are artists Jordan Rakei, Adrianne Lenker, Lava La Rue and the marvellously named band Fat Dog.
