Charlie was served a petition by HMRC after his company was reported to be more than £6.4k in the red[/caption]

On Monday, BBC Breakfast presenter Charlie Stayt was revealed to be facing the threat of bankruptcy after being served a petition by HMRC.

The star, who joined the show in 2006, and his wife Anne’s TV and broadcasting firm Stayt Limited was listed as being £6,409 in the red, in accounts filed in December.

Charlie is paid up to £194,999 a year at the BBC and has a four-bedroom home in Twickenham, South West London, worth £2.3million.

Since The Sun’s exclusive broke about Charlie’s alleged financial difficulties, the presenter has returned to TV screens.

He hosted a live segment from Normandy as part of a D-Day anniversary segment and has not publically addressed the bankruptcy claims.

While Charlie appears to be facing financial problems, other breakfast TV presenters are sitting on vast fortunes – here we report their staggering and surprising net worths.

Martin Lewis – £123m

The Money Saving Expert has carved out a sizeable sum since launching his website in 2003, which offers tips, financial advice and information on consumer rights.

Martin sold the website for a staggering sum – reportedly up to £87million – back in 2012 but retained a stake in it, which is worth more than £12million.

He’s topped up his earnings with appearances on Good Morning Britain and This Morning, his TV show The Martin Lewis Money Show and four books.

Martin explained that money means “I don’t have to work” and “never have to work a day again in my life”, which allows him freedom when choosing jobs.

He added: “I choose what I do and why I do it and that’s the greatest luxury and freedom that you can have, that your life is your control.”

According to The Sunday Times Rich List, Martin is worth an enormous £123million.

Susanna Reid – £8.5m

Susanna Reid has hosted Good Morning Britain since it first aired on our screens back in 2014 – and his handsomely paid for it too.

In 2021, it was reported that she signed a new contract that saw her pay rise from £750,000 per year to an impressive £1.1million.

Around the time of her negotiations, an insider told us that she “kept ITV sweating a bit” while she bartered for a better deal that made her one of TV highest-paid women.

“She knows she is a huge part of the show and is increasingly involved in the day-to-day decisions too, alongside her presenting role,” the source said at the time.

Susanna, who is reportedly worth £8.5million, owns a property in Balham, South West London where the average house price is £955,521, according to Right Move, and semi-detached properties can fetch nearly £1.9million.

Richard Madeley – £4.2m

He’s been dubbed TV’s “king of cringe” and the “real-life Alan Partridge” because his one-liners regularly leave him in hot water.

But Richard Madeley is laughing his way to the bank as he sits on an impressive fortune of £4.2million.

In 2022, LadBible reported the 62-year-old was worth £3.9million and most of it comes from her estimated £150,000-a-year salary.

Former Labour politician Ed Balls was a surprising signing for GMB in 2022 but has enjoyed regular stints co-presenting the show ever since.

The 57-year-old was tipped as one of the replacements for Ben Shephard since his move to This Morning back in March.

He’s reportedly worth between £2.4million and £4.1million, which came from his political career and TV appearances.

Ed – who appeared on Strictly back in 2016 – won Celebrity Best Home Cook two years ago, had his own episode of Who Do You Think You Are? and appeared on Comic Relief twice.

He also fronted the doc Travels In Trumpland, where he confronted supporters of disgraced former US President Donald Trump.

Last year, the BBC revealed she is paid between £178,000 and £184,999 per year for her work and she is believed to be sitting on a £230,000 fortune.

This week, Sally fronted BBC New At One – prompting fans to fear she could leave the corporation’s morning show but nothing has been confirmed.

In 2020, she hit back at an X user’s bizarre claim that she “probably earns more than more than Rishi [Sunak]” and wore £500 Louboutin shoes.
