The 50-year-old Northern Irish presenter hosts his breakfast programme on BBC Radio Ulster each morning.

However, standing in for the Beeb journalist was Chris Buckler who revealed Stephen was rushed to hospital.

Joining Chris on the line, Stephen then explained the horror mishap, saying: “I was trying to move 10 boxes of tiles. I didn’t realise how heavy tiles were so they all landed on my big toe.”

In total Stephen spent six hours in A&E which meant he was unable to front his show.

While Stephen reassured his colleague and the listeners that he was “still alive”, Chris was sceptical of his story.

He said: “There is a little bit of kind of reluctance to believe any of this inside your team this morning… because they don’t believe for a second that you actually do anything like physical manual labour.

“You basically employ people to move things… so what have you been doing? Have you run out of men?”

Stephen clapped back and went into detail about how “a wee sliver of a bone that has broken off” from the accident.

He then heaped praise on hospital staff, saying: “The staff were fantastic, thank you very much to all the staff up at the Ulster Hospital.

“It was terrifying, it really was.”
