Former Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa stars as the Fifteenth Doctor alongside Coronation Street’s Millie Gibson as companion Ruby Sunday.

However, eagle-eyed viewers have noticed Ncuti and Ruby are not the only constant on-screen presence in the new batch of episodes.

Former Coronation Street actress Susan Twist has also appeared in each episode of Ncuti’s tenure so far.

You’d be forgiven for not making the connection, as her appearances to date have been relatively minor characters.

She’s played an evacuated space officer in Space Babies, a dinner lady in A Devil’s Chord, an AI-operated ambulance system in Boom and a friendly hiker in 73 Yards.

Meanwhile, Susan also portrayed Mrs Merridew in Wild Blue Yonder, one of the show’s 60th anniversary specials.

Her character can be seen talking to Isaac Newton in the 1600s, before he identifies “mavity”.

An intriguing twist saw the actress reappear in the Christmas special, this time in modern-day London, with character watching Ruby’s band play at a bar.

Susan’s recurring presence comes after it was previously reported she had been snapped up to play a mysterious new big bad.

Viewers have been sharing theories on social media as to how Susan could factor into the remaining episodes.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one wrote: “My original theory was that she’s The Monk stalking 15 and Ruby. But now, I’m thinking she’s The TARDIS in human form. Similar to Idris from The Doctor’s Wife.”

Another commented: “My initial theory was that she was an older Ruby. But after 73 yards that theory is out the window.”

A third suggested: “Her cameos are all the same character in disguise as different people, trying to have influence across space and time.

“As for that, she’s the one who kept gravitas hidden from Isaac Newton, after he misremembered gravity as “mavity”.

While a fourth offered up: “Maybe it´s similar to what happened to Clara in “The Name of the Doctor” where she got into the Doctor´s time-stream and got multiplied to be able to help him throughout their life.

“In that case this person wanted to keep track of Doctor/Ruby for some reason.”

Doctor Who airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
