On Saturday, his presenting co-star Si, 57, understandably showed huge emotion as thousands of bikers gathered in London ready for a ride to Cumbria.
The TV chef looked hugely touched as he chatted to BBC Breakfast about the event and admitted it was going to be emotional as he said: “Of course. It’s a celebration of my best friend that we’ve lost.
“And yeah, it’s very emotional.
“You never know how these things are going to impact you.
“It is a celebration of Dave’s life, that’s why we are here, because he was so irritatingly positive all of the time.
“And we love him – that’s why we are here.”
The bunch – clad in tropical print tops and T-Shirts showcasing Dave’s face – are adopting the phrase “I am having a Dave Day.”
Si added: “Positive, upbeat, irritatingly funny, thats what we want.
“Ah look, he’s a big miss isn’t he,” before ruffing his hair as he paused.
Si estimated around 20,000 riders would be joining the route to Barrow In Furness in Cumbria – which was Dave’s home town – today.
BITTERSWEET MILESTONE
Last month, Si thanked fans as he marked a bittersweet career milestone.
The pair’s new book The Hairy Dieters: Fast and Fresh was released on April 25, around two months after the death of co-author Dave.
Taking to Instagram to share his gratitude with 385,000 followers, Si, 57, wrote: “It’s just a massive thank you from me for all your support – and all the Hairy Bikers team, really, for all your support for Fast and Fresh.
“I’ve just had the news that we’re number one, not just in food and drink we’re number one in the bestsellers’ chart.
“Thank you for your continued support, it means such a great deal and particularly fitting at the moment.
“So, thanks so much, lots of love to you all.”
Previously, The Hairy Dieters scooped a National Book Award in 2012.
TRAGIC PASSING
Earlier this year, Si announced Dave’s tragic passing on social media.
His co-star announced the tragic news in a statement, prompting a flurry of emotional tributes from celebrity friends and fans alike.
Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, Si said at the time: “Hi everyone, I’m afraid I bear some sad news.
“Most of you will know Dave has been fighting cancer for the past couple of years.
“Last night, on 28th February 2024, with Lili, Dave’s wife, his family, close friend David and myself by his side, he passed away peacefully at home.
“All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing. His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu who Dave loved like his own.
“Personally, I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment. My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow.
“I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.
“I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”
