Now he will be involved in even more heartbreaking scenes as he is dealt another blow.
At the flower shop flat, an Eyegaze consultant teaches Paul how to use his new equipment after it was revealed he will soon struggle to use the stairlift.
Meanwhile, Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) returns to the street from the US, complete with new boyfriend, Felix.
She wants to introduce Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) to her new love, who is waiting to meet them for a drink at the Rovers.
However as they go to leave the flat, Paul crashes down the stairs in a horror fall.
At that moment, Summer arrives with her new beau just as Todd also turns up.
How will the meeting go as Summer explains her dysfunctional family?
He is not the only one who struggles as Ken Barlow (William Roache) will also lose his own independence in upcoming scenes.
Daniel (Rob Mallard) and Steve McDonald will visit Ken in hospital after he was found at the bottom of the stairs at home.
The longtime street resident will be horrified when he is told he will need round the clock care as he recovers.
Steve assures Ken that the family will pull together and make sure that he will be kept safe in his own home.
At this prospect, Ken can’t help but force one of his signature sarcastic smiles.
