NETFLIX

Sweet Tooth

FANTASY available from Thursday

PA
The third and final season of Sweet Tooth kicks off next week[/caption]

Strange but beautiful, heart-rending but funny, Sweet Tooth is one of the most magical shows Netflix has ever given us.

Set in a version of the present day where a virus has decimated the world’s population, while hybrid babies with animal characteristics have started being born, it follows the trials and tribulations of young Gus (Christian Convery), a boy who’s half human, half deer.

The third and final season begins this week, reuniting viewers with Gus, his hybrid friends and his protector, Jepperd (Nonso Anozie). Together, they set off for Alaska, hoping to find Gus’ mother, Birdie (Amy Seimetz), and are joined by Dr Singh (Adeel Akhtar). But when a new threat emerges, Gus’ life is put in jeopardy once again.

Hit Man

FILM available from Friday

Adria Arjona and Glen Powell starring in Hit Man[/caption]

Inspired by a true story about a fake hitman, this twist-fuelled neo-noir from director Richard Linklater – who also created School Of Rock and Boyhood – stars the charismatic Glen Powell as by-the-book professor Gary Johnson, who moonlights as a fake hitman for the New Orleans PD.

He’s a master of disguise with a strong track record at snaring people who want to bump off their enemies.

That’s until he finds himself drawn to one of them – the alluring but potentially lethal Madison (Adria Arjona) – and a steamy, dangerous affair begins.

How To Rob A Bank

DOCUMENTARY Available from Wednesday

Netflix
A nerve-racking documentary on a real-life cops and robbers story[/caption]

A real-life version of cops and robbers unfolds in this gripping true-crime documentary.

In 1990s Seattle, a student turned meth dealer called Scott Scurlock became inspired to attempt bank robberies after seeing the action movie Point Break.

It quickly turned out that he had a gift for such heists, and the man dubbed “Hollywood” by law enforcement officials, including the FBI, went on to mastermind at least 19 bank robberies.

But who exactly was the charismatic rebel using cinematic flourishes to amass millions of ill-gotten dollars? And did his story have a Hollywood-worthy happy ending? A remarkable “you couldn’t make it up”-style tale.

Hitler And The Nazis: Evil On Trial

DOCUMENTARY available from Wednesday

Netflix
Hitler’s horrendous crimes will be unravelled in Hitler And The Nazis: Evil On Trial[/caption]

This six-part series tells the story of the evil dictator Adolf Hitler’s ts rise and fall using the experiences of eyewitness William L Shirer, one of the only American journalists in Germany at the time.

Combining re-enactments and interviews, the series promises a personal and powerful examination of this dark chapter in history.

“In America, we are in the midst of our own reckoning with democracy, with authoritarianism knocking at the door and a rise in antisemitism” says director Joe Berlinger.

“This is the right time to retell this story for a younger generation as a cautionary tale and on a global scale.”

Jo Koy: Live From Brooklyn

COMEDY available from Tuesday

Jo Koy: Live From Brooklyn will drop on Netflix in a couple of days[/caption]

American stand-up Jo Koy wasn’t relatively unknown in the UK until the Golden Globes in January when he hosted the bash and came under fire for his opening monologue, which was branded both “unfunny” and “distasteful”.

It clearly hasn’t held him back, though, because this week, Jo – who’s previously lent his voice to animated movies like Leo and The Monkey King – is releasing his fifth stand-up special for Netflix.

Filmed in November at the King’s Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, the special finds him riffing on subjects including social media, ageing, and entering a new phase of his life.

DISNEY+

Star Wars: The Acolyte

SCI-FI available from Wednesday

©2022 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All Rights Reserved.
Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-Jae will be starring in Disney’s Star Wars: The Acolyte[/caption]

A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, the only treats that Star Wars fans had to keep them happy were the three original films and a couple of low-budget animated series about robots and Ewoks.

Fast-forward 40 years and they’re spoilt for choice, thanks to all manner of movies and spin-offs, some worth watching – hello, The Mandalorian – others less so.

Now, here comes another series to add to the list – The Acolyte – set before the events of 1999’s The Phantom Menace.

When a series of sinister crimes sends shock waves across the galaxy, Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-Jae) investigates, bringing him up against a former young Jedi apprentice (Amandla Stenberg) who has now become a dangerous warrior.

The series blasts off this week with a double bill, followed by weekly episodes for the next six weeks.

Becoming Karl Lagerfeld

DRAMA available from Friday

Caroline Dubois - Jour Premier - Disney
The new documentary delves into German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld’s life[/caption]

Thanks to his huge success and instantly recognisable look, the late German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld became a giant of the fashion world.

This hotly anticipated drama turns back the clock to the early 1970s and Karl’s early days, when his talent and drive helped him become a leading light of a stylish but cut-throat world.

A ready-to-wear designer unknown to the general public, Karl (Daniel Brühl, Captain America: Civil War) is 38 and about to fall in love.

He’s also set to challenge his friend (and rival) Yves Saint Laurent (Arnaud Valois) as the king of Parisian couture.

Expect huge egos, incredible outfits and a whirlwind of glamour from Paris to Monaco and Rome. In French with English subtitles.

PARAMOUNT+

Mayor Of Kingstown

DRAMA available from Monday

PA
Mayor Of Kingstown return for a gripping season three[/caption]

The return of Taylor Sheridan’s gritty crime drama for a third season is something of a minor miracle.

After all, in January 2023, the show’s star, Jeremy Renner, almost died after being run over by a snowplough, an accident that left him with 30 broken bones and required months of recovery.

Thankfully, Jeremy was well enough to return to work in January this year, and filming of the new series began.

The result is another batch of sometimes brutal but engrossing episodes in which town boss Mike (Jeremy) is called upon to keep the peace by whatever means necessary.

But when a series of explosions rock Kingstown, and the Russian mob descends on the city, it’s clear that he’s going to have his work cut out.

Let The Canary Sing

DOCUMENTARY available from Wednesday

Paramount+
New feature-length documentary about icon Cyndi Lauper[/caption]

The remarkable voice behind classics like Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time, Cyndi Lauper was one of the most colourful pop stars to emerge from the 80s – and she’s still going strong today.

The story of Cyndi’s childhood, explosive rise to stardom and her impressive career since, is told in this feature-length documentary.

Featuring extensive chats with the lady herself, not to mention the likes of Boy George, Billy Porter and Patti LaBelle, what’s clear is that there’s always been much more to Cyndi than those bubblegum pop hits – as her LGBT activism and support of organisations that fight for the right to abortion and reproductive healthcare prove.

My Son Jeffrey: The Dahmer Family Tapes

DOCUMENTARY available from Friday

With so many documentaries, shows, films and podcasts already devoted to monstrous American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, surely there’s little left to say about the man and his appalling crimes? Apparently not.

Here comes My Son Jeffrey: The Dahmer Family Tapes, which uses Dahmer family home movies and never-heard-before conversations between Dahmer – who was eventually sentenced to 16 life imprisonments – and his father, Lionel, to tell his horrific story once again.

Also featuring testimony from childhood friends, army roommates, neighbours and police, it’s another horrifying glimpse into the life and mind of the infamous killer.

Chris Pine’s new comedy-drama, which he wrote, directs and stars in[/caption]

There’s no way around it: the early reviews for Chris Pine’s comedy-drama – which he wrote, directed and stars in – were almost universally damning.

The movie is about the unlikely investigations of wild-haired Los Angeles pool cleaner Darren Barrenman (Chris), who becomes mixed up in a confusing corruption conspiracy involving a water company, and it does have some charms.

Despite being a pale imitation of Jeff Bridges’ legendary performance as The Dude in The Big Lebowski, Pine’s Barrenman is likably odd, while the supporting cast of legends Annette Bening and Danny De Vito bring some serious star quality.

Marlon Wayans: Good Grief

COMEDY available from Tuesday

Comedy legend Marlon Wayans is back with a new hilarious stand-up gig

From early Noughties comedies including Scary Movie -which he also co-wrote – and White Chicks to last year’s sports biopic Air, American comedian Marlon Wayans has carved out a very successful career on the big and small screens.

Now, he gets personal with this stand-up show, which tackles a universal theme.

Recorded at Harlem’s iconic Apollo Theater, the native New Yorker candidly discusses the grief that came from recently losing both of his parents.

Along the way, he tackles topics such as caring for ageing parents and the life lessons that he learned from them.

It’s been a long wait between opulent lunches for fans of this international iteration of the Housewives – season one’s reunion concluded in September 2022.

But now we’re back in the UAE, with original cast members Chanel Ayan, Caroline Brooks, Sara Al Madani, Lesa Milan, and Caroline Stanbury all returning for more.

Joining the friend circle is newbie Taleen Marie – an Armenian-American trained singer who once opened for Christina Aguilera.

Taleen is a friend of Caroline Brooks’ but soon cosies up to Caroline Stanbury.
