Ben Thompson was absent from BBC News yesterday as he was speaking to the public on the BBC World News feed.
But after just one day, the BBC Breakfast star returned to his usual role and received widespread support on social media.
Following his appearance on the news programme today, fans expressed their delight at seeing Ben’s familiar face on screen.
As he helmed the show, a Ben fan account with 414 followers took to X and welcomed him back, tweeting: “Good to see @BenThompsonTV at the helm on BBC News after missing him yesterday as he was on the World feed”.
Ben’s absence from the show comes after he recently bid an emotional farewell to a BBC staple after 30 years on air.
At the beginning of this month, the 43-year-old announced that World Business News is being taken off air by the BBC News channel after 30 years on screens.
The beloved show first launched in 1995 and has featured presenters such as Sally Bundock, Victoria Valentine, and Ben Boulos.
On May 7, Ben broke the news of the axing on the morning edition of the WBR show, revealing it would be the final episode.
Speaking to the audience at home, he said: “Before we go, some news about us.
“After more than 30 years, we’re going to say goodbye to World Business Report. It’s had quite a few different looks over the years, but it’s time for a new look and a new name.
“Business Today is what we’ll be called from later today, all you need to know about money, markets, finance, tech, travel and trade.
“Business Today here, on BBC News. But for one final time, from me and the team, you’ve been watching World Business Report. Bye bye.”
Ben looked teary-eyed as he read out the statement, with fans taking to X and sharing their reactions about the announcement.
One user penned on the social media platform: “End of an era. Seems like yesterday I was pressing for you to race back to the Dubai office to make the 0830 WBR live.”

CNN’s Richard Quest added: “My gosh. So many years ago. And what brilliant broadcasting we did. (Making it up as we went along).” (sic)
BBC News presenter Maryam Roshiri chimed: “What a fab show to have worked for! X.”
“I hope the theme song remains the same, Ben?” one fan asked, to which Ben responded with a crying emoji.
