BBC fans were whipped into a frenzy after stars of a popular show hinted that they would be returning to screens.
Daisy Edgar Jones teased a hotly anticipated second season of hit romantic drama Normal People, which also stars Paul Mescal.
The twelve-part series based on Sally Rooney’s novel of the same name premiered in 2020 and received impressive reviews.
Daisy Edgar Jones teased something is coming[/caption] Fans have been hoping for a second season of Normal People[/caption]Four years after the Normal People’s successful first season, Daisy, who played Marianne Sheridan, has taken to Instagram and posted a selfie with Paul that she captioned: “We’ve got some news to share! Watch this space.”
In the image, the stars of the hit BBC psychological romance looked in good spirits as they posed with their two fingers up, which could mean a peace sign or indicate an upcoming season two.
Following the star’s post, viewers of the show wasted no time taking to social media and expressing their hope that an announcement about a follow-up season would soon arrive.
One user reposted the image from Daisy’s Instagram story, where she shared it with her 1.8 million followers to X with the caption: “NORMAL PEOPLE NATION WAKE UP.”
A second person also posted the original snap to her page and penned: “Our prayers have finally been answered.”
“If we’re getting Normal People season two, I will melt,” a third chimed.
Another watchful fan account spotted that Element Pictures, who made the show in 2019, also reposted the snap of the two actors.
The four-time Emmy-nominated show became an international sensation after it aired.
Normal People follows the relationship between Marianne Sheridan (Daisy) and Connell Waldron, played by Paul, as they come of age and start experiencing a rocky romantic and sexual entanglement.
The official season one synopsis reads: “Outspoken student Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is an outcast at school.
“Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal) is the quiet popular jock. His mother works as a cleaning lady in the Sheridan’s large family home.
“The two Irish teens have a secret sexual relationship, but he refuses to acknowledge her in public.”
The first series included the entire plot of Sally’s novel, which made a second season seem unlikely.
However, diehard fans also hoped for show bosses to create another season – and their wishes could come true.
The award-winning show gave Daisy and Paul stardom[/caption] The romantic drama started on Hulu then later aired on BBC[/caption]Previously, the series director, Lenny Abrahamson, informed Radio Times:“I have a fantasy of doing a kind of ten-year [gap], seeing where they are in ten years’ time sort of thing,” when he was asked about the possibility of a second season.
Despite the speculation, there still has never been any concrete evidence that a second season is on the horizon.
Streaming service Hulu did not order a second season of the heart-tugging series, though Paul did share his enthusiasm for a new outing with GQ in 2022.
He said: “There’s been no conversation other than the fact that I would like to lead from the front and make it happen somehow.
“I’m very pro-season two, but honestly, there’s no plans in place for that to happen.”

In recent times, Normal People has been likened to a Korean American romance titled Past Lives.
The Oscar-nominated film, starring Greta Lee and Teo Yoo, landed on Netflix UK early this year, and fans are highly impressed with the romantic drama directed by Celine Song, which was developed by American film production company A24.
Past Lives tells the story of two childhood friends, Na and Hae Sun, whose lives drastically change after she moves to North America with her family.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrest apart after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea.
“Decades later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront destiny, love and the choices that make a life.”
Past Lives won Best Feature at the Independent Spirit Award and has been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
After amassing over $24million at the box office, the critically acclaimed movie was added to the UK’s Netflix platform.
All episodes of Normal People are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
