The telly presenter has had a tough few years suffering with chronic pain – which has left him needing a wheelchair and walking stick at times.
Since the pair were dropped by ITV’s This Morning in 2020, Ruth has continued to work on Loose Women, whereas Eamonn has joined GB News.
And their son Jack, 22, moved out of their family home last year and headed off to university.
A source said: “Eamonn and Ruth’s relationship changed when they left This Morning.
“They started moving in different directions in their careers and their priorities started to change.
“Eamonn was desperate to return to Belfast, which he thinks of as home, but Ruth would never move. It became a bone of contention.
“As her ITV career continued, Eamonn went down another path and they became ships in the night.
“For the past two years they had led separate lives, professionally and personally.”
The Sun has revealed that Eamonn had already moved out of his family home before their shock split announcement.
The Sun contacted Ruth and Eamonn’s reps for comment.
Earlier today Eamonn broke his silence on their split as he wore his wedding ring on TV.
Eamonn said the support shown by fans following the announcement had “meant so much” to himself and Ruth.
The 64-year-old told GB News: “Just before we move on we’d just like to thank people for your support for Ruth and I over the last few days as to the news of our separation.
“Your support for both of us is very much appreciated.”
In a statement on Saturday, a spokesperson said: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”
Pals told how the couple drifted apart in recent months and Eamonn had moved out of the mansion they shared in Surrey.
Their last social media post where they were seen together was in July 2022, with the duo playing out a skit to promote her Feeling Fabulous event.
Eamonn and Ruth met all the way back in 1997 and started dating that year.
They made their relationship public two years later.
The pair welcomed son Jack into the world in 2002.
Four years later they started presenting Friday’s instalment of This Morning.
They tied the knot in 2010.
