PRIME Video has renewed US spy dramedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith for a second season.

It was inspired by the 2005 film of the same name which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

The streamer released all eight episodes of the action series in February.

Actor, comedian and rapper Donald Glover plays the lead role of John Smith.

Donald is known for starring as Troy in hit sitcom Community, as well as for his music career under the name Childish Gambino.

The multi-hyphenate talent also co-created the Mr. and Mrs. Smith series alongside Francesca Sloane, who serves as showrunner.

Maya Erskine stars opposite Donald in the role of Jane Smith.

According to US publication Variety, Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge was originally slated to play Jane before exiting the project.

The age of the reboot is here to stay

It seems every streamer going is desperate to cash in on our nostalgia, whether we want them to or not.

Reboots are big business – with countless movie franchises launching spin-off series to take advantage of the new streaming landscape.

From Lord of The Rings to the The Karate Kid and countless Star Wars projects, we’re certainly in an age of blockbuster telly.

However the announcement of Mr. and Mrs. Smith came as a shock to many given the action hit’s iconic links to Brangelina.

Season one received mixed reviews but clearly Prime Video are doubling down and hoping to win viewers over with its second batch of episodes.

One can’t help but wonder though – why not focus on telling new stories rather than rehashing old ones, especially when the originals are so popular? As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Here’s hoping Mr and Mrs Smith isn’t another franchise driven into the ground after being milked dry of all fun.

Despite the show being renewed, stars Donald and Maya have not yet been confirmed to return for the second run.

In the first season, two lonely strangers secured jobs working for a mysterious spy agency.

They had the opportunity to have a luxurious life of espionage, travelling around the world, wealth and a dream home in Manhattan.

However, the catch is the pair found themselves under new identities, the Smiths and in an arranged marriage.

Now hitched, they faced high-risk missions in each episode while the story delved into their complicated dynamic as a couple.

The characters also faced their cover story becoming more complex, as they started to develop genuine feelings for each other.

Season one welcomed a string of big name guest stars such as Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Sharon Horgan, Michaela Coel and Ron Perlman.

The entire first season of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is available to stream on Prime Video.
