And it runs in the family after Paul’s brother Stephen McCole, 50, starred in the BBC drama in 2014.

A telly source said: “Paul has already shot scenes on Montego Street and his character is here to stay.

“He’s playing DCI Douglas who’s hell-bent on nailing the notorious Murdoch family in a bid to clean up Shieldinch.

“Some of the cast and crew worked with his brother Stephen who played a corrupt builder on River City a few years – it’s a small world.”

Paul is known for a 2007 Still Game episode where he played a bogus policeman who terrorised Craiglang amid a power cut.

And the star looks unrecognisable 17 years after appearing in the Glasgow-based sitcom.

While brother Stephen has starred in a string of shows including alongside Martin Compston in Mayflies as well as roles in Shetland and Vigil.

And the sibling duo aren’t the only close connections on the much-loved soap.

We previously told how River City chief Martin McCardie was forced to kill off his own wife on the show.

The chief executive’s real-life missus Maureen Carr – best known as Still Game’s wonky-toothed Edith – played nasty Theresa O’Hara in Shieldinch for three years.

But it led to a difficult conversation at home in Glasgow’s Cardonald district when Martin had to tell Maureen he was giving her character the bullet.

Martin said: “My wife Maureen started out as a wee baddie called Theresa and the audience hated her.

“But by the time she got killed – and it was me who decided to kill her – everyone loved her.

“Was it a difficult conversation at home? Well I had been at work and I came back in the evening and asked ‘What other stuff have you got on right now?’
