A BBC presenter who appeared on Beat The Chasers left fans stunned with his performance as he secured an eye-watering cash prize for charity.

The six Chasers –  Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett, Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace, Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty, Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha, Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan, and Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis– all praised the star as ‘very smart’.

A new series of The Chase’s spin-off show, presented by Bradley Walsh, kicked off on Monday, May 6.

Beat The Chasers sees celebrity contestants go head-to-head with the chasers for a chance to walk away with life-changing money they could donate to a charity of their choice.

However, unlike The Chase, the contestants must face all six chasers simultaneously.

During last night’s instalment of Beat, Breakfast presenter Charlie Stayt and Irish comedian Neil Delamere played alongside BBC presenter Rick Edwards.

Rick has previously worked for XFM before presenting on E4, then later covered the Paralympics for Channel 4 in 2012.

Following his sports presenting gig, he worked for both the BBC and ITV.

In 2021, he fronted BBC Radio 5 Live’s Breakfast coverage after Nicky Campbell moved to a later slot in the day.

Now, during the latest episode of the ITV quiz show, Rick wowed fans after winning a whopping cash prize.

The BBC Radio 5 Live host was the last contestant left to face the chasers after his teammates had already missed their targets.

Following his successful run during the cash builder questions, where he secured  £4,000, Rick was offered the chance to win big money.

The 44-year-old hastily accepted the challenge to try and win £120,000 for a whale and dolphin conservation charity.

However, to achieve it, he needed to answer as many questions as he could in 60 seconds – against The Chasers- ensuring that his clock didn’t count down to zero.

After already defeating four other celebrities on the night, the six quiz geniuses gave themselves 42 seconds to beat Rick, hoping that his clock would tick down before theirs did.

As he stepped up to the podium to face the chasers alone, Rick answered several of his questions correctly, leaving the quiz stars gobsmacked and running out of time.

Rick still had time to spare as twelve seconds were left on his clock.

The Chasers could not answer questions about the origin of the name given to the fascinator hat, which proved costly later on.

Ultimately, Rick took home £120,000, which he donated to the whale and dolphin charity he named when he came onto the stage.

His appearance on Beat the Chasers isn’t the first time he’s supported environmentally-focused charities, having been a champion for green organisation Global Cool as far back as 2010.

ITV viewers at home were stunned and proud as they took to social media and congratulated the TV star on his big win.

Taking to X(Twitter) one user wrote: “Fantastic result! So, pleased for Rick and his charity. £120k win at the end is amazing, and it is thoroughly deserved after that textbook performance.”

Another added: “Huge congrats, Rick, on winning a massive £120,000 for your chosen charity on tonight’s Beat the Chasers. You’ve played really well, and well done.”

A third penned: “I just knew Rick Edwards would win, the guy is super intelligent and all-round great guy, fully deserves the win. He’s chase-level intelligent.”

Rick’s victory has broken show records as it’s the joint biggest prize in Beat the Chasers’ history.

Back in March 2021 was the only other time £120,000 was won on Beat the Chasers after EastEnders actor Shaun Williamson defeated the ITV quiz maters and walked away with the six-figure sum.

Shaun had 15 seconds left on his clock as the audience celebrated his major win.

You can watch Beat the Chasers on ITV and ITVX.
