The BBC Breakfast presenting duo celebrated 50 years of the inventing competitions that were run by Blue Peter.

They retold the fascinating story when one young boy actually came up with the idea for a flat-screen TV on the long-running children’s programme.

To fully celebrate the occasion, they welcomed Peter Purves onto the show as he made a huge return to the publicly funded corporation, live from his family home in Suffolk.

Although he was best known for his stint on Blue Peter, he was also known to cover other huge events for the BBC.

He presented early editions of Crufts, coverage of the Darts, as well as a show called Kick Start.

The TV legend even appeared in an edition of Doctor Who in 1965 where he played the role of American tourist, Morton Dill.

This was alongside William Hartnell, the first actor to ever play the famous Time Lord.

But as Peter, 85, appeared on the big screen in the studio, fans could not get over how he looked.

They flocked to social media in their droves to express their surprise and amazement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

One fan posted: “Peter Purves looking absolutely fantastic. Brilliant to see him on our telly again.”

“Peter Purves looking good at 85. @BBCBreakfast,” stated a second viewer.

A third user gushed: “Peter Purves on #BBCBreakfast klaxon! And he’s got a little moustache these days.

“Talking about the Blue Peter design the future competition from 1974 with a flat screen tv you can watch on both sides. Happy days all round.”

Meanwhile, a fourth stated: “Great to see Peter Purves on TV , he looks great & still very engaging #bbcbreakfast.”

And a fifth added: “Sorry but was that Peter Purves I saw back on my TV this morning on #BBCBreakfast? He looks fantastic!”
